It&#8217;s quite competitive and rewarding. This platform has made developers think differently and sketch their ideas, showcase them and get a team on board to bring the ideas to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To bring the ideas to life (feature), we needed a team. Though the concept looks simple, the complications and the development process required <\/span><b>different platforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>team up<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charts being the main focal point for this feature, <\/span><b>Mr. Anish Benjamin<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Senior Tech Lead)<\/span><\/i><b>, Mr. Ankur Tripathi<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Senior Dev)<\/span><\/i><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><b>Equity-Charts Team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wanted to support this idea. Fortunately, we had the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bandwidth and the product to integrate with it. Some people require hand-holding at least in the beginning. Few do it live <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paytm offers Wealth Community)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> others pre-recorded. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose the tutor has identified a change in the market and wants to mark the indication on the chart screen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paytm Money Chart offers advanced options for drawings and indicators)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By following a video, a new investor may not understand and could be applying the indications wrongly on the chart other than what was instructed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We wanted to provide a feature where people can share the complete information on the chart with any other investor. Having such a feature helps educators to share their exact configurations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with any of their followers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus keeping everyone on the same page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept was clear to us. But where do we begin?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"driven\"><b>Concept Driven Development<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions and brainstorming are mandatory for any workflow. We had multiple brainstorming sessions on how to shape up this feature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This feature relies more on the <\/span><b>core<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the <\/span><b>Equity-Charts module<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Equity-Charts Module uses <\/span><b>ChartIQ<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the chart interface provider and an <\/span><b>API service layer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We decided to go with the below architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2929\" style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2929 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/paytmmoney.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/basic-share-chart-architecture-paytm-money.png\" alt=\"basic share chart architecture paytm money\" width=\"651\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.paytmmoney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/basic-share-chart-architecture-paytm-money.png 651w, https:\/\/www.paytmmoney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/basic-share-chart-architecture-paytm-money-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Basic Share Chart Architecture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This feature&#8217;s flow could be best described as follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users should be allowed to <\/span><b>share<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the stock&#8217;s chart &#8211; Trigger Point<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equity-Charts Module to <\/span><b>capture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all the configurations and properties on the chart<\/span><\/li>\n<li>API layer to generate a <b>unique ID<\/b> and validate the configuration<\/li>\n<li>API layer <b>persists<\/b> the configs as a JSON object in the cloud <i>(AWS S3)<\/i><\/li>\n<li>API layer returns the Share ID to <b>generate a link<\/b> for loading the shared chart<\/li>\n<li>On loading the link, Equity-Charts should <b>fetch<\/b> the config from the cloud, <b>parse<\/b> and <b>apply<\/b> the properties on the host application<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the above steps, we were able to achieve the basic functionality, But not a refined one.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing is achieved without effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Test-Driven Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Phase-wise Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were necessary to refine.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 id=\"phase\"><b>Phase-wise Development<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splitting the development phase-wise made it easier to debug issues, test, and refine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Phase 1 &#8211; <\/b><b><i>Storing the Config<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On sharing the chart, capturing all the configurations became cumbersome. An elegant JSON configuration was needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Debugging the core Chart Library, we figured out the essential information needed for loading a chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After storing only the essential information, we ran into a <\/span><b>circular object constrain issue<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(JSON object referring to itself)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We then decided to restructure and decouple the references to eliminate this constrain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the JSON object was flattened and pushed to storage (AWS S3).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Phase 2 &#8211; <\/b><b><i>Delay in Data fetch<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a user wants to scroll back to a past year, Equity-Charts fetches partial data in chunks. So, there might not be any delay in the response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose the user wants to share a chart while viewing a past year <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(say 2016 &#8211; 2017)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The dataset is available from the past year until today <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(since the user scrolled back from 2021 to 2016)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the initial load of this shared chart, In a single API request, all datasets were retrieved (from 2016-2021) instead of partial fetches, which impacts the Equity-Charts module&#8217;s performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We needed to make the loading of data robust. Instead of fetching all data, we wanted to partially load the future data only when the user scrolls to the respective year <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and so on)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By partly fetching, we could programmatically decide on the size of the dataset to be loaded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After fixating on the size, we were able to optimize the amount of data fetched.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Phase 3 &#8211; <\/b><b><i>Cross-Platform Sharing<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a user is sharing a chart from an <\/span><b>iPhone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Android<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> device, the screen size is not equivalent to the website screen or vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loading only the mobile-viewed chart on the website wouldn&#8217;t be a great experience. So we decided to dynamically set the buffer size for data fetch based on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If extra buffer data is available, we could load the shared charts from a mobile device to the website, ensuring the web app has no blank space on the chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile devices load the beginning portion of the chart shared from the web app.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Phase 4 &#8211; <\/b><b><i>Stock Specific Configurations<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loading the share chart should always belong to its respective stock. You are not allowed to share a <\/span><b>NIFTY 50<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chart and <\/span><b>load it on Reliance Stock<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On load, the shared chart stock ID gets validated. Only if there is a match, the share-chart will load successfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of a mismatch, we fall back to the current stock&#8217;s chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Phase 5 &#8211; <\/b><b><i>Integration Testing<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are in this last process of integration testing with host applications Web and iOS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the testing phase is successful, Share-Chart would be ready to be bundled and shipped to users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how\"><b>How to Share a Chart on Web<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2942 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/paytmmoney.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/chart2.jpeg\" alt=\"After Equity-charts captures the configurations &amp; store the JSON object, we return the shared chart link via a pop-up.
