Do Not Exercise (DNE) is being reintroduced from April 28, 2022!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Do Not Exercise (DNE)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, a little background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the traders trade in stock options without any intention of taking or giving physical delivery. But things get tough when In The Money (ITM) stock options loom!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Do Not Exercise\u2019 allows a trader to instruct the broker if he\/she does not wish to exercise the right to give or receive deliveries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will prevent the risks around the physical settlement and will allow brokers to stop exercising Close To Money (CTM) option strikes on behalf of clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Recently many traders were unable to exit positions before they expired, leading to physical settlement. If a trader doesn\u2019t have enough money to take physical delivery or sufficient stocks in holding to give physical delivery, traders are forced to bear severe losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Understand With An Example<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many times, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of The Money (OTM)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> options become In The Money (ITM) at the very last moment on expiry day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, SBIN is trading at \u20b9492 and you have bought a 500 strike price call option for \u20b93 of premium. As your option is Out of The Money (OTM) you don\u2019t need to maintain the additional margin. But then comes the expiry day! There\u2019s a sudden spike in the price and SBIN closes at \u20b9 500.05. Your option becomes ITM as the stock price. What do you have to do now? You have to take physical delivery of \u20b9 7,50,075 (1500 lot size X 500.05) worth shares of SBIN shares. If you don&#8217;t have sufficient balance in the account then this will be a problem for you and your broker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Enter Do Not Exercise (DNE)!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the market closes, brokers usually check clients\u2019 free balance. Now, enter Do Not Exercise (DNE)! If the balance is less than the required balance to take physical delivery, the position will be marked as \u201cDo not exercise\u201d and the option contract will expire worthlessly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Will Do Not Exercise (DNE) Work?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This facility will be provided to specify \u2018Do not Exercise\u2019 instruction on expiry days in options contracts. On expiry day, brokers shall be given an option to specify not to exercise in respect of <\/span><b>Close To Money (CTM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> option strikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Close To Money (CTM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strikes range shall be arrived at as under:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Call Options &#8211; 3 ITM options strikes immediately below the final settlement price shall be considered as \u2018CTM\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Put Options &#8211; 3 ITM options strikes immediately above the final settlement price shall be considered as \u2018CTM\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Paytm Money Policies on <\/b><b>Do Not Exercise (DNE)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have In The Money (ITM) option and don&#8217;t have a sufficient balance as per the physical delivery rule, we will square off the position. Read the physical delivery blog post<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paytmmoney.com\/blog\/physical-delivery-settlement-margin-option\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On expiry day, we will square off all the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In The Money (ITM)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> open positions without considering the available margin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If any trader wants to take physical delivery, they will have to inform us over email. We send separate emails to all traders who have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In The Money (ITM)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> open positions along with the process to take physical delivery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many times, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of The Money (OTM)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> option becomes In The Money (ITM) at the very last moment on expiry day.
