How We Made “Add Funds” Feel Like Magic Inside the OrderPad2 min read
A PM × Tech story
A few months ago, during one of our weekly user journey reviews, something kept popping up:
“Why does adding funds throw me off the OrderPad?”
“I lost my order after payment — had to start over.”
“It just… breaks the flow.”
As a trader myself, I felt that pain.
So we dug deeper.
Hi, I’m Vinny Akkal, Product Manager II at Paytm Money, and this is a story about how small UX cracks — when fixed right — can lead to huge improvements in user trust.
💡 The Problem
In our earlier journey, when a user didn’t have enough balance to place an order, tapping “Add Funds” would kick them out of the OrderPad into a full-screen payment flow.
Context was lost.
Conversion dropped.
New users often gave up.
It wasn’t broken. But it wasn’t seamless either.
🛠️ The Collaboration
Enter: Kranthi Kumar, our tech lead.
In one of our brainstorms, I simply asked:
“Can we keep the user inside the OrderPad while they pay?”
Kranthi didn’t flinch.
“Let’s build a mini-journey — embedded, lightweight, but tightly coupled with the main flow.”
And that’s exactly what we did.
The result? A compact Add Funds module embedded within the OrderPad — no redirection, no memory loss, just flow.
🚀 What Changed?
- Payment now happens inside the OrderPad
- User sees their trade throughout
- Post-payment, the order resumes automatically
- UPI + Net Banking, handled natively
It feels instant. Clean. Invisible, even.
🧪 The Impact
We’re already seeing reduced drop-offs and higher completion rates for trades requiring fund top-ups. But more than that, we’re hearing things like:
“Finally! It just works now.”
“Didn’t even realize I added funds — that fast.”
And that’s the kind of feedback that makes it worth it.
💬 Final Thoughts
Sometimes, the most meaningful product wins aren’t flashy new features — they’re clean, thoughtful upgrades to flows people use every day.
Big thanks to Kranthi and the engineering team for turning a product intuition into a smooth technical execution. 🙌
We’re live now for equity trades on v10.22.0 and above. Would love for you to try it out — and as always, happy to hear your thoughts.
