Everything You Need To Know Before Investing In ELSS Funds2 min read

With the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) fast approaching, it’s that time of the year when you will have queries about tax deductions.

Equity Linked Saving Schemes (ELSS) mutual funds are one of the tax-saving investments under the provisions of Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) can claim tax deductions of up to Rs 1.5 lakh through contributions to ELSS funds.

So, keep this in mind when filing your taxes. Don’t forget that the deadline for filing ITRs is December 31. We’ve given some pointers on how to file income tax returns.

What are the benefits of investing in ELSS funds?

On the Paytm Money App, you can invest in an ELSS mutual fund after checking its performance and rating. You can also check the expense ratio, the sectors holding, and calculate how much return you could potentially receive if you pick the fund.

There are several funds to choose from, in which asset allocation is usually made towards equity or equity-linked schemes.

ELSS funds come with a three-year lock-in period, shorter than some other investment options such as fixed deposits (FDs) and Public Provident Fund (PPF). This means that you cannot redeem your holding until the end of the lock-in period.

Investing in ELSS funds does involve a fair amount of risk. While they do give high returns, the returns are not guaranteed and are linked to the underlying securities.

You can invest in ELSS funds either with a lumpsum amount or via the SIP route. If your risk-appetite is not high, it might be better to invest via the SIP route.

So while ELSS funds help in wealth creation, do choose wisely and check the details before investing.
